Two new multipurpose organic production plants are due to come on line by the end of the year at Merck KGaA's Darmstadt headquarters.
Representing an investment of around €200m (£136.8m), the new facilities will mark a significant expansion in the company's custom synthesis capacity and will position it as a major player for at least the next 10 years.
Over the past three years, Merck's custom synthesis business has doubled to reach sales of €60m (£41.1m) in 2002. The company expects further strong growth, and aims to achieve a three digit sales figure in the next few years.
