The universities of Leeds and Sheffield in the UK have launched a Centre for Industrial Collaboration to provide leading-edge r&d support to industries involved with particle and colloid science.
The Industrial Centre of Particle Science and Engineering (ICPSE), is based at the University of Leeds and combines two internationally acclaimed research groups: the Leeds Institute of Particle Science & Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
The Centre has a research base of more than 120 people, and access to more than £20m of state of the art equipment and resources. ICPSE's knowledge and resources are available to small, medium and large companies to exploit innovative thinking and develop new ideas. The Centre will provide research and development services as well as strategic, technical and legal support to companies in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical, water, metals and mining industries.
Services include:
• Consultancy (process audit teams, process mod-elling & simulation, characterisation)
• Particle characterisation and analytical laborato-ries
• Suspension rheological and powder flow testing
• Manufacturing process analysis, development on and off-site
• Manufacturing plant development laboratory
• Modelling, simulation and process prediction consultancy
• Bespoke training courses (rheology, instrumenta-tion, modelling, material handling, crystallisation, col-loid science, dust explosions, particle separa-tion/filtration, nanoscience, legislative compliance)
• Research and advisory services for UK and EU research funding and project management
• Organisation of funded collaborative research
'Any organisation that uses particles in processes or products can benefit from better understanding of their properties,' said ICPSE's commercial manager, Dr Simon Lawson. 'Our aim is to be a 'one-stop-shop' for all aspects of particle technology, whether that is designer particulates for drug delivery, waste effluents or minimising wastes in the quarrying sector.'
