Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker announces his planned team of commissioners for the next five years

The identity of the new EU trade commissioner charged with bringing the planned Trans-Atlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) to conclusion has been unveiled. Cecilia Malmström, of Sweden, who is currently the EU’s home affairs commissioner, has been nominated to hold this sensitive position from 1 November.

The announcement came as incoming Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker announced his planned team of commissioners for the next five years. They also include a new health commissioner, Lithuania’s Vytenis Andriukaitis, a doctor and current health minister in his country. Another important nominee is the new internal market commissioner, Poland’s Elżbieta Bieńkowska, who is currently deputy prime minister in her country. Her new job would be powerful, given that she would also be responsible for EU industrial policy, including subsidies.

Another important appointment was Portugal’s Carlos Moedas, as research and innovation commissioner.

A novel aspect of the new Juncker Commission would be the appointment of influential vice presidents (also commissioners) given responsibility for broad areas of policy and the lower ranking commissioners involved in them. They would drive the key policy priority of the new Commission, which is economic growth and job creation. One of these vice presidents would be Estonia’s former prime minister Andrus Ansip, who would have responsibility for removing trade barriers within the EU and creating a more efficient European single market.
