Economically unviable operations force closure by end of 2010

Süd-Chemie, of Munich in Germany, in accordance with its joint venture partner PQH Holding, of Fribourg in Switzerland, is planning to cease production at its Swiss subsidiary Süd-Chemie (Schweiz) by the end of 2010 due to ‘continuing financial losses under very difficult market conditions’.

The site in Romont manufactures tubes for protective packaging solutions mainly for the pharmaceutical and the nutraceutical industry and currently has 36 employees. The company was established as a joint venture between Süd-Chemie (51%) and PQH Holding (49%).

Since its foundation in 2006, Süd-Chemie (Schweiz) has been suffering from ongoing economically unviable operations and underemployed production capacities. The market situation was additionally affected by aggressive competition from low-priced East European products.

Süd-Chemie therefore needs to consolidate its production capacities and envisages stopping production at Romont prior by the end of 2010. Some of the current production would be transferred to Süd-Chemie's pharma packaging production site in Romorantin in France.
