Oxford University to launch NMR facility

The University of Oxford has purchased a high field 900 MHz superconducting magnet that will help scientists study the 3-D structure of protein molecules and their role in the onset of diseases such as Alzheimer's in greater detail than previously possible.

Research using the new magnet will be carried out at the University's Oxford Centre for Molecular Science (OCMS), an inter-disciplinary research centre set up in 1988.

'We look forward to receiving the 900 MHz magnet,' said Iain Campbell, director of the OCMS and the University's Professor of Structural Biology. 'The higher magnetic field will make it easier to determine protein structure and enable us to see larger protein molecules. This information will be used to improve our understanding of disease states and to define how drugs can be used to control biological processes.'
