Pfizer's green credentials have been recognised when it was named by the Sunday Times as one of the top 50 environmentally friendly companies in the UK.

In the inaugural Sunday Times 50 Best Green Companies survey, Pfizer Global Research & Development at Sandwich was recognised for its commitment to reduce its impact on the environment. The Sunday Times list is unique in that it takes account of the views of employees as well as assessing the environment, performance, policies and business practices of the company.

A number of environmental programmes led to Pfizer being placed in the Top 50 Best Green Companies, including:

  • Its 'Green Chemistry' programme, which has successfully reduced the consumption of major chemicals used during the discovery and development work on new medicines undertaken at Sandwich.
  • The company's employees, who have also played their part in the 'Switch-Off' energy campaigns during Christmas and Easter which saved nearly 250 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • Improved recycling, doubling the amount of office waste paper recycled in 2007 as a result of a successful awareness building campaign.

"It is great to be recognised for the work we have done to improve our environmental performance," said Dr Annette Doherty, research site head and site leader at Pfizer Sandwich Laboratories. "Green issues are very important to us and we will continue to explore new ways to reduce our environmental impact even further."
