Piramal Pharma receives Ontario investment for API site

Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS) is to invest more than $5.3m in upgrading its drug substance manufacturing site in Aurora, Canada, supported by a $1.75m investment from the Ontario government

The funding, provided through Ontario's Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund, will support infrastructure upgrades at the site and strengthen its capacity for research and development, clinical production and commercial manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

PPS said the investment will help ensure the commercial availability of critical drug substances while strengthening domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity in Ontario.

The project is expected to create 12 new jobs and protect 183 existing positions at the Aurora facility.

The investment will also support projects focused on sustainability, operational efficiency and site modernisation, according to Piramal Pharma.

"This funding will help enable Piramal Pharma Solutions to upgrade our site infrastructure, strengthen our manufacturing capabilities, and enhance our ability to serve patients and customers around the world," said Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma.

The investment comes as governments increasingly look to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical supply chains and manufacturing capacity.

The Ontario government's Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund was launched in 2024 to support the development and commercialisation of health technologies in the province. An additional $24m was allocated to the fund in the 2026 Ontario Budget.

PPS said the Aurora investment will help advance its manufacturing capabilities while supporting the development and commercialisation of health technologies for new markets.

The company operates as part of Piramal Pharma Ltd and provides development and manufacturing services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies globally.
