Plug-and-play lab separator
The new LAPX 404 separator module from Alfa Laval has been developed specifically to allow bio-chemists to create laboratory-scale biotech processes and then scale them up accurately to production levels.
The unit incorporates all the necessary controls, piping and a high-efficiency centrifugal separator into a skid with a footprint of less than 1m². It can be wheeled into place and connected easily to utilities, making it suitable for development programmes involving different laboratories or teams of technicians. This feature also means that the LAPX 404 can be removed from sterile or clean areas for mechanical maintenance.
The centrifuge incorporates Alfa Laval's patented, low-shear disk inlet, which ensures gentle product treatment and is said to eliminate the risk of anti-foam fouling. In addition, it can be used with a wider variety of biological substances than membrane technology because the risk of blinding and subsequent flux reduction is avoided.
As the LAPX 404 has an intermittent self-cleaning feature, its solids handling capacity is greater than that of a tubular bowl machine and needs less operator involvement, resulting in more hygienic operation, the company says.
