Positive indications from the Government
The industry welcomes the further positive indications of Government intent in the field of research and science contained in the Chancellor's statement on 15 July on the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR).
In particular, we warmly welcome the announced spending to boost the country's science and technology base. Also, the provision of more money to improve further the teaching of science in schools is seen as a boost to the consolidation of the country's technical skill base which will be of benefit to all industries relying on the availability of suitably educated science students.
The ABPI view was summed up by Director General Dr Trevor Jones, who said: 'I am delighted that this Government recognises the importance of ensuring that the UK continues to have a strong and vibrant science base'.
ABPI gives a particular welcome to the news that, under the CSR, more Government money will be available to:
- allow for improvements in the quality of science and engineering laboratories and equipment in colleges and universities;
- ensure a strong future supply of skilled scientists and engineers by attracting students in schools and universities to science;
- fund both higher volumes and new areas of research, such as proteomics and brain science.
On the broader front, we welcome the long-heralded increase in cash for the National Health Service, although it is stressed that the money made available needs to be spent wisely on proven health interventions such as medicines.
