Pretium commercialises PET container with integrated handle

Pretium Packaging, a North American manufacturer of plastic containers and closures, using technology from Practically Impossible Labs, has developed a stock polyethylene terephthalate (PET) container with an integrated handle

The SureHandle container is easier to handle for young children, the elderly and those with physical challenges, compared to pinch grip or straight-sided alternatives.

The handle not only provides carrying advantages, but also improved pouring control. It has been engineered for products needing fill temperatures up to 120oF and can accommodate an induction seal or foam liner.

Paul Kayser, President and CEO at Pretium, said: “There have been a variety of attempts over the years to develop handled PET containers, but most have fallen short of the mark.

"This new technology creates all sorts of possibilities for products including beverages, foods, household chemicals and industrial chemicals that could benefit from a monolayer container with an ergonomic handleware solution.”

The container combines preform technology developed by Practically Impossible Labs and Pretium’s injection and blow moulding manufacturing expertise.

The preform is structurally different to traditional straight sided, injection moulded preforms used to blow mould PET containers. This preform features an injection moulded handle attached to the side wall.

Currently available in monolayer, PET only, Pretium has partnered with several suppliers who can provide additives such as UV inhibitors and oxygen scavengers to address barrier requirements.

Unlike two-piece handled containers, which are typically made from more than one material, the integrated PET handle and body combination is made solely from PET, facilitating recycling. Monomaterial structure means the bottle does not have the potential to contaminate the PET recycling stream.
