Chemical technologies company Reaxa has launched osmium tetroxide EnCat (OsO4 EnCat) - the latest member in its encapsulated catalyst range offering 'easier, faster and cleaner' pharmaceutical production.

Osmium tetroxide EnCat unlocks the potential of osmium tetroxide (OsO4) as a useful oxidation catalyst, by containing the volatile catalyst within microcapsules made with a robust polyurea matrix. This effectively overcomes many of the handling concerns in working with osmium tetroxide. The catalyst will be particularly appropriate in industrial scale dihydroxylation of alkenes and in research chemistry, says the manufacturer.

Work on osmium tetroxide EnCat by Reaxa and collaborators at Cambridge University achieved an efficient micro-encapsulation process, resulting in a product that suppresses osmium tetroxide's high vapour pressure, with no detectable leaching into solvents or atmosphere.

Osmium tetroxide EnCat samples will shortly be available from SigmaAldrich.
