Sample preparation from Retsch

Published: 1-Aug-2004

In many laboratories chromatographic methods are used for the analysis of the active substances and ingredients in tablets. In conventional methods the sample is first ground in a mortar, then solvent extracted, usually with the help of ultrasound, but this all takes time.

In marked contrast, the extraction method using the Retsch mixer mill MM 301 takes about two minutes, and the subsequent centrifugation about five minutes. This is far less than the conventional method, which takes 45-90 minutes on average.

The use of the same grinding jar, which is available in six different materials, for grinding, extracting and centrifuging guarantees loss-free sample processing. No additional solvents are necessary for purification steps.

The mixer mill extraction method is highly suitable for tablets of all sizes and degrees of hardness. The Retsch MM 301 Mixer mill allows each pharmaceutical laboratory to prepare samples of tablets, capsules and granulates for analysis in an efficient and economic way.
