UK company New Brunswick Scientific has developed a personal-sized freezer to solve the problem of sample security.

The U101 compact upright freezer has a capacity of 3.6ft3 and allows researchers to keep biopsies, cells and other samples safely stored in their own lab, even if space is limited. It has an ultra low temperature of -86°C.

The units can be placed either on or under the bench, and are available with a stacking kit to double the storage capacity without increasing the footprint.

The outer door is lockable, while a four-digit password and alarm prevents unauthorised changes in the temperature set points, and a lock-plate over the power on-off switch prevents accidental disconnection.

The energy efficient, low noise freezer can hold 60 two-inch boxes for vials or tubes. The U1101 is one of nine models available.
