Shire acquires US manufacturer

UK company Shire Pharmaceuticals Group, of Basingstoke, has acquired US pharmaceutical manufacturer Atlantic Pharmaceutical Services (APS) from Niro for approximately US$17m (€17.3m).

APS is Shire's current contract manufacturer for the beadlets in Carbatrol, and its facilities in Maryland, US, will become one of the principal manufacturing sites for Shire's US operations. Certain of the company's products requiring specialty manufacturing, including Adderall XR, Carbatrol and Pentasa, will be manufactured there in due course, subject to relevant regulatory approvals. Shire's strategy of dual sourcing for key products, including Adderall XR, Carbatrol and Pentasa, remains unchanged.

Shire's only other US manufacturing facility, located in Valley Stream, New York, is in the process of being divested. At that facility, Shire manufactures immediate release drugs Adderall and Dextrostat, two products that do not require specialty manufacturing and that contribute to just 10% of Shire's group revenues.
