Solutia's investment programme

Solutia Pharmaceutical Services Division (Solutia PSD) has completed several steps in its integrated investment program for the facilities of its subsidiaries, CarboGen and AMCIS, located in Switzerland. At CarboGen's Neuland site, the addition of two new conical process dryers offers state-of-the-art solids handling and contained isolation of APIs. Also, the recent commissioning of a 200l cryogenic reactor (-120°C), a 200l high temperature reactor (+350°C) and two 100l multipurpose reactors provide a full range of reaction conditions and additional capacity at the 18-month-old Neuland facility.

The Aarau site recently achieved GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) status following an inspection by Swiss authorities, thus allowing CarboGen to offer new services in the field of analytical chemistry for non-clinical laboratory studies. Safety has been enhanced by adding an adiabatic reaction calorimeter at the Aarau facility to compliment the existing RC-1 calorimeter supporting all three CarboGen sites in the collection of thermokinetic data.

These investments in leading edge production and safety equipment reflect the absolute commitment to quality, cross-contamination control and operator safety in Solutia PSD.

The expansion activities at the AMCIS site in Bubendorf are reaching full speed with the green light on a phase II expansion program consisting of six new reactors from 400l to 1,600l, as well as two 25,000l tanks for solvent storage and liquid waste handling scheduled to be completed in early 2002.

All expansions activities are part of an on-going integrated program that will see further enhancements to Solutia PSD facilities in the coming months.

The company is a world leader in performance films for laminated safety glass and after-market applications; resins and additives for high-value coatings. They are also involved in process research, process development and scale-up services for pharmaceutical fine chemicals; specialties such as aviation hydraulic fluid and environmentally friendly cleaning solvents for aviation and an integrated family of nylon products including high-performance polymers and fibres. n
