DEHNpipe from DEHN (UK) is an ATEX-certified surge arrester designed for protecting process field devices in hazardous areas against the effects of lightning strikes and other electrical surges.

DEHNpipe carries ATEX certification II 2(1) G EEx ia IIC T4 T5 T6 and also meets the requirements of FISCO (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept).

The new device is specifically designed for use in applications where potentially flammable or explosive gases are likely to be encountered, such as the pharmaceutical industry.

DEHNpipe, which is IP 67 protected, is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and can be used in outdoor areas. It can be screwed directly onto the housings of 2-conductor process field instruments and transmitters instead of conventional cable glands. Its fixed conductors are then connected with the terminals of the process field device, so that the protective components are installed directly into the cable run.

The result is energy-co-ordinated surge protection in which the surge arrester protects the inside of the process field device, with the interfering impulses being discharged via the metal enclosure only and not via the inside of the field device.

The system can also be used to protect plastic field enclosures with the addition of suitable earthing accessories.

DEHN (UK) is the UK subsidiary of DEHN & SOEHNE, a European leader in lightning and surge protection for all data, network, measurement and computer systems including buildings and structures.
