The pharmaceutical supply chain produces, distributes and delivers lifesaving and life-changing medications to patients around the world.
It not only influences the reliability and speed of drug distribution but plays a key role by ensuring the cost, quality and dependability of medications — and helping patients to achieve their desired health outcomes.1
However, this vital supply chain is facing numerous challenges — including drug shortages that threaten patient care and lower customer satisfaction. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of active drug shortages in the US was 270.
More than one-third of all active shortages (41%) began in 2022 or earlier.2 Delays that impacted access to medications led to increased drop-off risks and patients going without much-needed therapies.
No prescription should go unfilled. The pharmaceutical industry needs to adopt seamless and scalable technology solutions to overcome cost, time and effort barriers to prescription care in a complex supply chain, states Chip Parkinson (pictured), Chief Executive Officer at Gifthealth.
