Watson-Marlow Bredel, UK peristaltic pump specialist, recently celebrated its 50th birthday.
Over the last half century, the company (part of the Spirax-Sarco Engineering Group) has developed into the largest manufacturer of tube and hose pumps in the world, and has sold more than a million pumps.
Aside from the rapid development of its business, Watson-Marlow has had a hand in the preservation of a British landmark. When cracks began to appear on Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square, the specialist contractor employed used a Watson-Marlow 700 series pump to help repair the damage. The pump was used to meter an epoxy resin and inject it into the damaged statue, restoring it to its former glory.
The company's pumps have also been used in genetic research. The largest fruit fly lab in Europe, Cambridge University's Genetics Research Department, turned to Watson-Marlow for a pump that could be used to transfer thick food substances for Drosophila melanogaster flies into vials ahead of feeding.
In 2006, the company added to its already extensive range by introducing LoadSure technology to its popular 500 series products. The solution incorporates predetermined tube lengths and industrial or sanitary connectors to ensure correct loading, extended tube life and pressures up to 7 bar. RFID technology and ProfiBus technology can also be specified in LoadSure products.
