Anaesthetic award for Abbott UK

Published: 1-Apr-2003

Abbott Laboratories UK has received a special award on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland in recognition of its support of anaesthesia over the last 25 years. In that time Abbott Laboratories has introduced three key inhalational anaesthetics: enflurane, isoflurane and most recently sevoflurane. Sevoflurane is now the most commonly used inhalational anaesthetic in the UK.

Abbott has also invested in a programme of continued education, providing 'simulation training' to almost 50% of practicing consultants in specialist centres to help them prepare for unique events in the operating theatre. The company's manufacturing plant at Queenborough, Kent, has been the global production centre for anaesthetic gases for Abbott since 1980.

Bill Dempsey, senior vice president, international operations, said: 'Abbott Laboratories is pleased to have made contributions to advancing the practice of anaesthesia through the discovery of sodium pentothal in the 1930s to the development of anaesthetic gases that are commonly used in surgical procedures today.'
