Europe's cancer research spending nears US levels

While European Union cancer research spending is - according to the latest available 2004 figures - still five times below that in the US, the EU is catching up.


While European Union cancer research spending is - according to the latest available 2004 figures - still five times below that in the US, the EU is catching up.

According to a report from the European Cancer Research Managers Forum,Euro 3.2bn was spent on cancer research in the EU in 2004, an average spend per capita of €3.42, compared with €17.61 in the US.

However, as poor as this seems, this level of EU spending represented a 38% increase compared with 2003, when US spending was seven times greater than that in the EU.
