A new chemicals company, Lanxess, will trade as a standalone legal entity in the UK from 1 July, 2004.

The company's formation was announced by international healthcare and materials company Bayer at the end of 2003. Lanxess will go live on 1 July both glob-ally and locally, operating independently from Bayer and leaving the Bayer group entirely by early next year.

Chemical and petrochemical industries benefit from LANXESS' products and services, including basic chemicals, ion exchange resins, intermediates and styrenics. Subsidiary company Rhein Chemie is also part of the Lanxess group. The company holds a substantial position in custom manufacturing of intermediate and finished speciality and industrial fine chemicals. Fine chemicals for the pharmaceutical industry are a key part of Lanxess's business.

Terry Lloyd, managing director of Lanxess Ltd, the UK arm of Lanxess Deutschland GmbH, said: 'We now have the kind of lean, market focused and functional organisation that will keep us competitive, and encourage an entrepreneurial approach.'

The sales, marketing and admin functions for most of the Lanxess business units operating in the UK region are based in Newbury, Berkshire. Customers dealing with Lanxess in the Republic of Ireland will continue to be handled by Bayer, acting as agent for Lanxess, and working from its Dublin office.

The company's business units - under the groupings of performance chemicals, chemical intermediates, performance plastics and performance rubber - supply a wide range of industries, including automotive, construction, paper and textiles, as well as other chemical and petrochemical companies, and the pharmaceutical industry. The expected turnover for the UK/Ireland region is almost Euro 200m.
