Lonza, a Swiss supplier of APIs, has successfully concluded the first phase of the expansion of its Nansha plant in Guangzhou, China.
The new US$200m (Euro 155m) six-train API facility combines state-of-the art facilities, industry-leading development services and advanced cGMP chemical manufacturing plants.
Production in the first train was successfully started in December 2008 with the first customer product.
The fully integrated site supports modern utilities, administration, r&d, kilo-lab and both small- and large-scale production. 70 scientists are supporting r&d, in a 1,000m2 lab area.
"This investment enables us to continue addressing the needs of our expanding worldwide customer base by adding manufacturing capacity, expanding our r&d services and increasing flexibility," said Lonza ceo Stefan Borgas.
The first phase of the small-scale plant in Nansha started operations in September 2007 with the aim of building a bridge between the kilo-lab and commercial-scale production.
Further expansion has been initiated with the construction of the next phase extensions (small- and large-scale plants).
