The possibility of a global paediatric research network has taken firmer shape in recent months, with EU industry representatives and medical regulators expressing support for a tie-up with their US colleagues and those from other countries. The issue is being taken up by a working group set up by the European Network of Paediatric Research (Enpr-EMA) in the European Medicines Agency.

Enpr-EMA comprises research networks, investigators and centres with recognised expertise in performing clinical studies in children, with the aim of fostering high-quality ethical research on the quality, safety and efficacy of paediatric medicines. The initiative was informed and encouraged by a workshop staged by the EMA last year in London, which was told about work in the US on elaborating the concept of a global paediatric clinical trials network by SOATT (Section on Advances in Therapeutics and Technologies).
