Wasdell Packaging has invested in a labelling system from Sessions of York to apply labels to its range of vials. As a contract packer to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, Wasdell Packaging required a highly accurate and efficient labelling system for a new project and found the solution in Sessions" RC30.

Designed to label a variety of difficult-to-handle products from 10mm to up to 30mm in diameter, the Sessions RC30 is being used to label three different sizes of vials.

After modifications, which included a hot foil printer with print presence detection and a pharma code reader, the RC30 takes the unlabelled vials and applies the labels after printing a batch code on them. It also checks that the barcodes will read and that the label and print are present, stopping the machine in the event of any fail.

In addition, the RC30 is supplied with an optional tray-to-tray feature, said to be ideal for small and difficult-to-handle products. Instead of randomly ejecting the labelled vials, a device fitted to the out feed of the machine turns them through 90° by means of a turning mechanism and then ejects them singly on to a catchment tray by a pneumatic cylinder.

"With the additional modifications, the RC30 is an extremely useful tool and has increased our production immensely," said Wasdell.
