The Wercs launches software modules to aid REACH compliance
US company The Wercs, a global leader in material safety data sheet (MSDS) authoring software, has launched REACH 1 2 3, a suite of software modules developed to capture and analyse the critical data needed to give US chemicals companies that are manufacturing or importing chemicals in volumes greater than one ton in the EU a head start on REACH compliance.
REACH legislation will require affected manufacturers to gather and report comprehensive data on physical, chemical, toxicological, and eco-toxicological properties of all chemicals manufactured in or imported into the EU. Failure to register will mean that the chemicals cannot be manufactured in or imported into the European market.
REACH 1 2 3 is a suite of software tools specifically developed to ease the process of becoming REACH compliant. Specifically, it allows manufacturers to easily capture critical data, make decisions by analysing this data, and push this data to the IUCLID 5 database.
The IUCLID 5 database was developed by the EU to provide an electronic method to register chemicals under the REACH guidelines. Specifically, IUCLID 5 will serve as the central database for the storage and retrieval of detailed hazard information of chemical substances.
'The EU estimates that there will be close to 30,000 companies registering more than 100,000 substances,' said Lou DeSorbo, president of The Wercs. 'REACH 1 2 3 is a more comprehensive alternative to developing an in-house system, and is built on 23 years of global hazard communication experience.'
The three main modules integrate into an organisation's IT infrastructure. The Wercs' Substance Information Management System (WercsSIMS) provides the critical capability for chemical manufacturers to manage the substance information data associated with their suppliers. Manufacturers will be able to seamlessly cross-reference their products with this established database to assess which chemicals will be impacted by REACH. In addition, manufacturers will be able to see the impact certain chemicals will have on their formulations.
WercsSIMS seamlessly plugs into the IUCLID 5 database through its IUCLIDSync module. This connection eliminates the need for manually uploading data and allows the data to be controlled and transferred between IUCLID 5, the Chemical Safety Report and 'extended' SDS without significant rework.
WercsDownstream is a portal that helps end users and manufacturers communicate effectively. This portal allows end users to check if risk management measures included in the extended SDS are relevant to his or her conditions of use and allows end users to communicate back to the supplier new uses of the product.
