New X and S Series models offer high performance with reduced environmental impact

Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces general purpose centrifuges with next-generation natural refrigerant cooling system

Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces the Thermo Scientific X and S Series Centrifuges, general purpose centrifuges that combine exceptional performance, versatility and enhanced sustainability to meet today’s laboratory needs. They feature natural refrigerant cooling systems compliant with European Union (E.U.) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) F-gas regulations.

These 4-liter centrifuges feature Thermo Scientific GreenCool Technology, utilizing hydrocarbon cooling (R290) with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, an immense reduction compared to previous cooling systems with a GWP of 1,430. They are more energy-efficient than earlier models, are designed for longevity and are manufactured at Thermo Fisher’s site in Osterode am Harz, Germany, a certified zero-waste facility powered by 100% renewable electricity.

The X and S Series centrifuges offer exceptional rotor performance and can be equipped with Thermo Scientific Fiberlite Carbon Fiber Rotor choices, which weigh up to 60% less than aluminum rotors, enabling faster acceleration and deceleration times and reducing energy consumption per run. They also include advanced safety features, ergonomic design and versatile configurations to support the needs of labs across medical research, biopharma and diagnostics industries.

“At Thermo Fisher, we take sustainability into account in every part of the product journey, from design to manufacturing to end-of-life disposal,” said Noreen Hong, vice president and general manager of growth, protection and separation at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “With the new X and S Series centrifuges, we’re enabling our customers to continue their critical work in areas like medical research, biopharma and clinical diagnostics while helping to reduce environmental impact. We have a longstanding history as a leader in centrifugation, and we are proud to offer general-purpose and floor model centrifuges that provide more sustainable technology without compromising the high-quality performance and security our customers expect.”

In March 2025, Thermo Fisher launched the Thermo Scientific Cryofuge, Thermo Scientific BIOS and Thermo Scientific LYNX centrifuges, the first floor-model centrifuges to feature this next-generation natural refrigerant cooling system. These centrifuges replace the Sorvall brand previously offered by Thermo Fisher.

Key applications:
Academic research, cell culture, cell and gene therapy, bioproduction, QA/QC laboratories, molecular biology, clinical diagnostics and clinical/IVF.

Features/benefits:

Enhanced sustainability: GWP reduced to 3 with Thermo Scientific GreenCool Technology using hydrocarbon cooling (R290), and energy consumption is up to 6% lower than that of previous models. Each centrifuge is manufactured in a certified zero-waste facility, utilizing 100% renewable electricity, in Osterode am Harz, Germany.

Exceptional rotor performance and versatility: Provide fixed-angle rotor relative centrifugal force (RCF), or G-Force, of over 25,000 x g, and swinging bucket rotor RCF of over 7,000 x g, efficiently handling even the toughest separations. Up to 18 optional rotors are available for the X Series and 13 rotors for the S Series, supporting multiple applications and needs.

Improved ergonomics and security: Thermo Scientific Auto-Lock Rotor Exchange enables rotor changes in less than 3 seconds, helping save time with ergonomic push-button technology. Ergonomically designed Thermo Scientific ClickSeal Biocontainment Lids offer glove-friendly, one-handed opening and closing capability. The X Series provides an optional Thermo Scientific SECURE-Spin Mode for connectivity and compatibility with sample tracking software.

Flexible operation: Intuitive user display through touchscreen interface (X Series) and standard LCD (S Series). Available in ventilated benchtop or refrigerated floor and benchtop models, as well as a general use model and an IVD/MD model to fit a variety of lab needs.
