DMV International, the industrial ingredients division of Campina, is to open a dedicated facility for the production of excipients for direct compression (DC).

The company has invested Euro 6.5m in a new production line and bringing the facility up to cGMP standards, creating 30 jobs. Bert Jansen, a member of the executive board of Campina, will open the plant on 7 May in Noerten Hardenberg, Germany.

A recent product innovation is DCL 14, a spray dried DC product that combines superior flow properties with high compactibility. A new anhydrous DC lactose with improved functionality, also produced in the Noerten-Hardenberg factory, will be introduced later this year.

'The production facility fully complies with cGMP standards and pharmaceutical procedures, and further boosts the capacity for the production of our Pharmatose direct compressible lactose,' said Herman Ermens, director business unit pharma. 'DMV's strategy for the pharma market is focusing on formulation expertise and portfolio expansion. Investing in a dedicated plant for DCL specialities is a logical step in reaching that objective.'

DMV International is focusing on a further growth in speciality pharma excipients. 'Investing in our pharma business is a cornerstone in our strategy and following the worldwide growth in the need for direct compression products,' said Jansen. 'Opening a dedicated pharma facility in Germany is a first step in separating out pharma activities from DMV's food ingredient business.'
