Essen Instruments, the Michigan, US-based supplier of instruments and contract services to the life sciences industry, has set up a European Discovery Services operation at the Biopark, Welwyn Garden City, UK.

The new facility, headed by Dr Del Trezise, former director of assay development at GSK, will provide contract and collaborative services for drug discovery based initially on ion channels and Essen's pioneering IonWorks planar array patch clamp electrophysiology technology and IncuCyte, which is said to be the first live-cell imaging system to fit inside a standard cell culture incubator.

Tim Dale, also formerly of GSK, will join the UK facility as lab manager.

"Del and Tim have a tremendous track record in the ion channel drug discovery field and together they bring an extensive working knowledge of the applications and power of Essen technology," said Kirk Shroeder, president and ceo of Essen Instruments.

"Their combined expertise, together with our new UK site at the Biopark, enable Essen better to support and grow its European client base."
