A key part of the European Union-funded programme to create a Serbian Agency for Medical Products (MPA) has been fulfilled with the completion of a new €300,000 headquarters building that will house 150 staff.
Opened by Serbian Health Minister, Dr Tomica Milosavljevic, it is expected to be fully furnished and operating within two months.
The building is part of a €2m EU-funded project, managed by the European Agency for Reconstruction, to develop the laws and organisations regulating Serbia's pharmaceutical sector. The MPA will be responsible for regulating the quality of medical products in the country, including licensing new products, monitoring their distribution, inspecting drug making facilities, ensuring products are produced to recognised standards, and promoting public information campaigns about new medicines. Most of its staff will be pharmacists and doctors.
EU experts have helped design its founding legis-lation to bring the law and regulations into line with standard European practice.
