Japanese pharma company Tanabe Seiyaku has opened a Shanghai office to tie up with local firms and Western drug makers to outsource production and co-operate in marketing efforts. Following China's accession to the World Trade Organisation on 11 December, Tanabe believes Beijing will ease regulations on drug production and joint marketing among pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Tanabe's subsidiary in Tianjin produces drugs to treat high blood pressure and promote digestion. It has a sales staff of 60 and annual sales of around ¥600m (US$4.84m).
