TeraView, a pioneer in terahertz technology, and Bruker Optics, a supplier of analytical instrumentation, have deployed the first commercial Terahertz imager in Japan to aid in the development of new pharmaceutical tablets and other solid dosage forms.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, Japan's largest pharmaceutical company, has recently acquired the terahertz tablet imaging system, TPI imaga 2000, the first of its kind deployed in Japan.

Terahertz radiation lies in unique region of the spectrum between the microwaves and infrared, and was the last unexploited region of the light and radio wave spectrum. The radiation can be employed in imaging systems to improve the quality of pharmaceutical products and decrease the risk of regulatory non-compliance.

TeraView, the company that applies the Terahertz frequency of light for spectroscopy and imaging, was spun-out of the Toshiba Cambridge Research Laboratory in April 2001.
