Will spread information and expertise on Chinese Traditional Medicine

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has welcomed the launch of a WHO Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicine in Macao, which will spread information and expertise on Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM).

Speaking at an International Forum on Traditional Medicine China, also held in Macao, Margaret Chan said: 'Traditional medicine has much to offer, especially as a contribution to primary healthcare and universal coverage.'

The new centre will be operated under the Macao government’s Health Bureau, and is charged with supporting WHO programmes. It will organise training, conferences and spread information about TCM. It will support the WHO in building governance capacity regarding TCM; help the WHO develop essential TCM terminology; and help the WHO ensure the quality and safety of traditional medicines.

It will also help the organisation help develop policy options, tools and technical support for all countries where TCM is used, boosting patient safety, service quality and effective TCM government policies.
