MULTIVAC has announced that it has selected Siemens’ Teamcenter software as its strategic product lifecycle management (PLM) backbone, as the packaging and processing equipment manufacturer looks to connect engineering and manufacturing and advance its digital transformation.
The move, MULTIVAC said, is intended to create a consistent "digital thread" across product development and lifecycle management, improving collaboration and data visibility while helping MULTIVAC manage growing product complexity.
The firm supplies processing and packaging solutions to the food, consumer and industrial goods, medical and pharmaceutical sectors, with operations spanning more than 80 subsidiaries and 165 countries.
Its equipment for medical products is designed to support sterile, reproducible and traceable packaging processes.
MULTIVAC will deploy Teamcenter, part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, to manage product data and connect engineering disciplines with downstream manufacturing environments.
The company said the platform will also provide the foundation for future AI-enabled engineering and analytics.
“By establishing a consistent digital thread backbone, we are creating the foundation for integrated product development processes and positioning our engineering organisation to support future digitalisation initiatives,” said Dr Christian Lau, Chief Technical Officer and Group President at MULTIVAC.
The adoption builds on MULTIVAC’s existing use of Siemens technology, including Designcenter Manufacturing and Teamcenter Manufacturing Resource Library for tool management in production.
The company is also using Siemens solutions to support CNC shopfloor operations, including tool management and, in future, NC programme handling.
Bringing these capabilities together within a broader digital backbone is expected to improve consistency between engineering and manufacturing data, while reducing errors and setup times and supporting more efficient production.
For manufacturers of complex equipment serving highly regulated industries — such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices — the ability to maintain continuity of product data from design through manufacturing is becoming increasingly important.
PLM systems such as Teamcenter are designed to create a connected digital thread linking product information, people and processes across the lifecycle, while supporting digital twins and collaboration between engineering and production teams.
MULTIVAC's decision also reflects the growing focus on preparing industrial data infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
Siemens has increasingly incorporated AI capabilities into Teamcenter, including tools intended to help engineering teams find and interpret information and automate routine tasks.
For MULTIVAC, the project represents a step towards a more integrated engineering and manufacturing environment, with the company positioning its digital backbone as an enabler for future analytics, AI adoption and more agile product development.
