Bavarian Nordic secures four-year UK vaccine supply contract

The agreement with the UK Health Security Agency will see the Danish vaccine manufacturer supply its MVA-BN mpox and smallpox vaccine, supporting the UK's long-term infectious disease preparedness

Bavarian Nordic has been awarded a four-year contract by the UK Government to supply its MVA-BN vaccine against mpox and smallpox, strengthening the country's long-term preparedness for emerging infectious disease threats.

The agreement, awarded through the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), will see the Danish vaccine manufacturer deliver MVA-BN supplies according to a scheduled timetable throughout the contract period.

It also includes optional flexibility provisions, although the deal's financial value and specific volumes were not disclosed.

The contract builds on an established relationship between Bavarian Nordic and the UK Government and will support the country's efforts to maintain vaccine stockpiles.

Sarah Collins, Director of Commercial, Vaccines & Countermeasures Delivery at UKHSA, said that working with trusted suppliers was essential to building a resilient and flexible vaccine supply chain capable of responding quickly to infectious disease threats.

This contract is an important part of that ongoing work to keep the public safe.

Hitesh Sahni, Senior Vice President of Public Preparedness at Bavarian Nordic, added: "We are pleased to continue supporting the UK government's preparedness efforts through this multi-year agreement."

Maintaining sustainable vaccine stockpiles and rapid response capabilities are essential to protecting public health and saving lives and we are proud that our vaccine remains an important component of the UK's resilience strategy.

Bavarian Nordic expands global vaccine supply activities

The UK agreement follows a series of developments for Bavarian Nordic across its public preparedness and travel health businesses during the past year.

In February, the company secured a $22.5m order from the Public Health Agency of Canada for MVA-BN, covering the manufacture of bulk vaccine in 2026, with filling and final product supply scheduled for a later date.

MVA-BN is a non-replicating modified vaccinia Ankara vaccine, marketed as IMVANEX in the UK and EU.

The vaccine's non-replicating design means it can be used in populations for whom traditional replicating smallpox vaccines are not recommended, including certain immunocompromised individuals.

In May, the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) exercised additional contract options worth $97m for the production and supply of freeze-dried smallpox vaccines.

The manufacturer has also continued to develop its global mpox vaccine activities.

In August, the European Commission approved an extension of MVA-BN's indication to children aged two to under 12 years, broadening its authorised use in the EU.

Last month, Bavarian Nordic announced further support for a global mpox emergency stockpile through vaccine supply and donations.

Alongside its public preparedness portfolio, the company has said that it is developing its manufacturing and supply partnerships — in March, it expanded its strategic partnership with the Serum Institute of India to include a technology transfer and contract manufacturing agreement for its chikungunya vaccine, supporting future supply to endemic low- and middle-income countries.
